Tribute To The Doctor
By Robert Louis Stevenson (A Century ago)
There are men and classes of man .The administrator, the lawyer, the Scientist, the Businessman and the Politician. The doctor stands above the common herd. He is a gem amongst men. Where others drive a trade, he practices an Art. He is welcome in every home and has a smile and word of cheer for all who meet him. He brings solace and comfort to the suffering, and courage and hope to the fallen and depressed.
As a man, he is humble and ever ready to give a patient ear to all who seek his advice. Ever alert and keen to learn from man, beast and nature. He gives freely his best, to allay suffering and pain without price or expecting anything in return. He is never gaudy in dress, speech or manners and is easily approachable to one and all who seek his company.
He makes no secret of his knowledge or skill and imparts them freely to all who wish to learn.
He is calm and collected in time of stress and tragedy rendering help and exercising his skill without fuss or hurry with faith in God and confidence in himself.
